Dear Members of the Committee,It is my privilege to provide this letter of support for the application submitted by Partner Dogs Canada.
As a primary care physician with over two decades of experience, I have witnessed first-hand the profound benefits that service dogs provide to patients with a wide range of medical conditions. In my own private practice, service dogs have proven to be of immeasurable value, particularly for children on the autism spectrum—enhancing not only the lives of these children but also the well-being of their entire families.
The presence of a service dog in my office has also had a positive impact on patients more broadly, especially those whose anxiety symptoms might otherwise interfere with their ability to engage in medical visits.
The success of such programs depends on ensuring that each service dog is safely and appropriately matched to an individual’s medical and psychological needs. Partner Dogs Canada demonstrates exemplary diligence in this regard, both a physician and a psychologist to screen clients, review relevant medical and mental health information (with the client’s consent), and collaborate with the individual’s primary care team.
In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, rates of both medical and mental health conditions have risen sharply, and our healthcare system has struggled to meet this increased demand. Incorporating service dogs as part of comprehensive patient care represents a compassionate, evidence-informed, and inclusive way to support those who might otherwise fall through the gaps.
Thank you for contemplating this application. I strongly endorse the work of Partner Dogs Canada and the invaluable role service dogs play in the health and well-being of our patients.
Sincerely,
Dr. Yasmine Kelton, MD – Director. Primary Care Physician, Holy Trinity Medical Center. Military Family Doctor Network; Calian Contractor, Canadian Forces Health Services; Menopause Society Certified Practitioner.
